A recent article in Forbes by Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic caught my eye. There’s a lot of disinformation around AI and what it will be used for, how it will affect and what it means for the labour market.

Chamorro-Premuzic points out that AI isn’t going away and though we may want to regulate some aspects of AI it will improve productivity and unlock human creativity by automating boring and tedious tasks, freeing us to focus on more fulfilling and imaginative activities.

Job search is not fun – apparently, it takes the average job seeker between 20-80 applications to receive one offer, and that is not necessarily the best or right offer for them. Each candidate competes against c.117 other candidates, so recruiters spend very little time on each CV. Standing out is hard, and scanning and assessing opportunities, getting assessed and attending interviews is a full-time job.

How can ChatGPT help?

At 10Eighty we advise you seek support and guidance from mentors, or career coaches, for personaliSed guidance tailored to your specific situation and goals. ChatGPT, and other generative AI platforms, can help with the routine work around job search and career development.

Refine your CV – successful job applicants customise their CVs to fit each job application, creating a new resume for each position they apply to. It’s time consuming, and can be done better and faster with AI. A tailored CV should increase the success of your applications. AI can help you identify areas for improvement, suggest better phrasing, and ensure that your documents are tailored to the job you’re applying for.

Do your research – practice answering common interview questions, discuss your strengths and weaknesses, and check your responses. Find insights into the latest trends, technologies, and skills that are in demand that might help to tailor your job search and preparation accordingly. Research the companies you’re interviewing with. Check out the culture, recent news, and projects they’re working on so you express your interest during interviews.

Expand your resources

AI can help you brainstorm and develop strategies for expanding your professional network. It can suggest ways to connect with industry professionals and potential employers. You’ll find insights into the current job market, including those industries which are expanding, the roles in demand, and where opportunities might be found.

You can look for guidance on negotiation strategies, discuss salary negotiations, benefits, and other aspects of the job offer. You’ll find tips on negotiating your salary, benefits, and other terms. The ChatGPT tool is really useful if you need information on a topic new to you, you can get a broad brush overview and then add supplementary questions to deep dive into areas relevant to your search.

These platforms are tools which will help you and save you time. You’ll still need to network which you can combine with your own research and intuition. The job search process involves personal factors, and you should tailor your approach to your specific situation and goals. Chamorro-Premuzic points out “if you don’t want to be left behind in the war for talent, you should at least experiment, pilot, and test AI as a critical tool that can help you identify, pick, and get picked for, the best available job and career for you.”
