CEO Michael Moran on collaborative learning in HR Magazine

In the May 2018 edition of HR Magazine an article entitled “Put your heads together” about the positives to be gained from collaborative learning features commentary from our CEO Michael Moran.

The article opens with the famous saying (which you’ll probably find in a few of our archived articles) from a professor at Portland State University who asserts that within 24 hours the average person has forgotten 70 per cent of any new information, and within a week this goes up to 90 per cent.

It continues with a spot-on definition of collaborative learning from Vlatka Hlupic, author of “The Management Shift”: “Tell me and I’ll forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I may learn”.

Michael’s take on this contemporary approach to learning is: “Where knowledge resides in organisations is changing: the collaborative approach is an acknowledgement that the way you access it is through more people, not one who knows it all.”

This is followed by an explanation of how collaborative learning works – the benefits and the downsides.

The article concludes with another quote from Michael: “Many people may not want to share information for fear of raising their head above the parapet… Getting people to feel able to participate is needed.”
