Coaching Objectives
Laying a strong foundation which will lead to a successful outcome for a 6-month role, including developing skills/techniques to assist in taking a high-level approach to driving change. Managing ambiguity and uncertainty and developing matrix management skills. Exploring opportunities for career transitions/next steps.
The Coaching Programme
We started with a tripartite meeting between sponsor, coachee and executive coach to discuss objectives and set goals. These were:
- Displaying more breadth, less depth and an increased level of executive presence and gravitas.
- Behavioural change around confidence, displaying self-assurance in leadership team meetings, and a willingness to challenge views and opinions and to be challenged.
- Explore strengths using a strengths-based tool. Also explore ‘Strengths in overdrive’ to allow the individual to understand what happens if they overuse a particular strength and the possible downside to this.
- Building on 360 outcomes and feedback, along with comparing past and present communications styles.
The coaching Sessions
Through the course of 8 sessions, the coach and coachee worked on the following challenges:
- Making an impact on the board during the 6 months
- Demonstrating high performance at the corporate leadership level
- Displaying more breadth and less depth, in line with responsibilities for corporate strategy
- Being adept at working in a matrix environment
- Knowing and adjusting to the audience
Measures of Success
The role was initially extended by 3 months; the individual chose to stay with the charity and was subsequently promoted to CEO.
- Reframed the individual’s thinking about next steps in their career.
- Demonstrated a positive shift in all areas identified in the coaching objectives.
