Description

Why Values are important to your career progression

By having an understanding of your own values and preferences, you have the ability to choose which type of career you’re best suited to.

Although your values and preferences are only two factors to consider, you’ll be amazed at how they can influence your career path and how and where you choose to pursue your career.

Some people state that particular belief(s) or idea(s) they hold onto is the ultimate decision for picking the career path of their choice.

If you want to understand how to align your values to your ideal career path we recommend having a look at 10Eighty’s Values Cards.

10Eighty’s colourful Values Cards provide a practical and highly visual way to identify your personal drivers – those things that give you satisfaction at work and increase engagement in your job.

They’ve devised an easy-to-follow exercise to help you consider how to increase the use of your core values at work possibly through creativity, volunteering for different projects, or roles outside work.

The cards will add another dimension to your coaching sessions and help you consider the values you’d like in your existing job or in a new role.

You could work with the cards on your own or in a collaborative session with a career coach or facilitator.

I did a Careers Masterclass with Michael Moran last year and we used the Values Cards and Skills Cards to great effect. They were fun to use, but with a serious outcome for the users. We had great feedback from the participants. I then bought both sets and have used them twice on colleagues who equally gave good feedback. I’m returning to consulting and coaching in the next few weeks and will certainly be using the cards as part of my toolkit.

The 10Eighty value cards remains part of my tool kit and I’m sure it will be very useful in an organisational coaching context. I continue to mainly use a series of incisive questions as part of a values exercise in my pre-coaching pack to help elicit client’s core values, and as part of a holistic coaching approach.
