A Night at the Opera

A NIght At The Opera

Tonight we’re doing something completely different and will be exploring the hidden world of ENO (English National Opera) to discover the secrets of the Coliseum, London’s largest theatre.

A friendly and informal tour of this extraordinary building will include the old Gentleman‘s Baronial Smoking Hall, Stoll’s Balcony, some Private Rooms, the Upper Glassed Terraces, the auditorium, the warren of staircases backstage, and underneath the vast revolving stage and orchestra pit (if we’re lucky).

We have a guest list of 60, some of whom are 10Eighty guests and others have been invited by Quentin Millington of Marblebrook our partner, strategic alignment consultant, from a wide range of organisations including Google, Rothschild, Hitachi, UBS, DHL, NHS Direct, Carillion PLC and The Crown Estate.

A NIght At The Opera

The agenda for the evening is

6.00pm    London Coliseum tour

6.30pm    Private reception in the American Bar

7.30pm    Iolanthe – curtain up

8.50pm    Interval drinks

10.05pm  Carriages

A couple of short talks during the tour will include Cal McCrystal (who’s directed Iolanthe) talking about the opera and how it links to the audience, then 10Eighty CEO Michael Moran will be talking about employee engagement.

About the Coliseum and ‘Iolanthe’

We did some research and found out that the London Coliseum opened as a Music Hall in 1904. It quickly became known as ‘The Peoples Palace’ – a theatre that was affordable but also inspired a sense of wonder and excitement.

‘Iolanthe’, also known as the ‘The Peer and the Peri’, opened down the road at the Savoy Theatre over 20 years before the Coliseum opened, on November 25, 1882 and it ran for 398 performances. Many feel that Iolanthe, Gilbert and Sullivan’s seventh work, is the most perfect of their collaborations.

If you’re a fan of the songs from Tim Burton’s ‘The Nightmare before Christmas’ or Monty Python’s surreal musical ditties we think you’d enjoy the witty and fast-paced songs of Gilbert & Sullivan’s operetta Iolanthe, particularly ‘The Nightmare Song’.

In this ‘fairy opera’, the House of Lords is lampooned as a bastion of the ineffective, privileged and dim-witted. The political party system and other institutions also come in for a dose of satire. But the author and composer couch the criticism among bouncy, amiable absurdities it is all received as good fun.

And we hope our party of 60 have some good fun tonight!

What I learnt at HR Grapevine Live

Connected Conversations

As regular readers will know 10Eighty was at the HR Grapevine Live event ‘HR Takes Centre Stage’ yesterday. This a very lively and well-attended day featured a plethora of engaging speakers and sessions exploring HR trends.

My main takeaways from the conference were that organisations need to become far more employee-centric to succeed, for example by customising performance appraisals to take into account individual roles and aspirations.

As I mentioned, the theme of the 2018 conference was ‘HR takes Centre Stage’. For this to happen, employers need to provide more connected career conversations via the dynamic combination of personal development and opportunities that meet the career aspirations of their employees.

Delegates seemed most interested in the methods available that support connected conversations which means understanding how your people tick, what their values are, their skills and their passions and how you can enhance their skills to help them achieve their personal goals.

Social media and photos from the day

10Eighty were busy on Twitter throughout the day, to kick off this social media selection here’s a couple of tweets from Director Liz Sebag-Montefiore

And Business Development Executive Hannah Moran

Fuel50 take the 2020 Talent Challenge at the Sydney HR Leaders Forum

Talent Challenge

We wanted to tell you about the outcomes from the HR Leaders Forum –  the 2020 Talent Challenge – a 2-day event about the future of HR, that our New Zealand partners, Fuel50, were lucky enough to attend. They joined a group of HR Champions who, like 10Eighty, advocate the need for better career experiences in organisations.

Organisations such as Telstra, AirBnB, BBC, Australian Army, ANZ shared inspiring stories about company culture that demonstrated how shifting the focus to your people pays dividends to your organisations’ success. The 5 recurring themes from the forum were:

1. Technology is disrupting the future workforce

Alex Badenoch of Telstra spotlighted that by 2020 job functions will have experienced a massive fundamental shift.  Anne Fulton, Fuel50’s CEO  presentation ‘The 2020 Talent Challenge’ asked the audience: ‘What did you want to be when you grew up?’ A question highlighting the stark reality of today’s workforce trends. Due to the increase in AI and robotics, 6% of jobs are expected to be completely eliminated.

Organizations around the world are looking to tackle the talent crisis. Employees are asking questions such as:

“How do I ensure my job won’t become obsolete?”
“How do I develop my skillset to stay relevant in my organization?”
“I can’t see a future here, should I start looking elsewhere?”

Technology can offer unique opportunities to increase the career experience and, as Michael Stanley from Vodafone Australia pointed out, it can also be fundamental to transforming learning.

2. Power in people

People matter and human interaction is still key, it’s all about achieving balance and creating the right conditions for people to flourish.

Joe Barr of John Holland highlighted, “being true to your values is always going to get you home; as long as you are true to your values people will see authenticity.” Alignment among your team on the ‘why’ and aligning HR strategies to what’s important within the organisation can be transformational, not just for business, but for your people too.

3. Importance of Leadership

There were many valuable insights surrounding leadership and how becoming a bit more human and ‘real’ could be key to becoming more engaging and accessible to your colleagues.

Kathryn van der Merwe (ANZ Australia) said that in order to fully thrive as a leader, communication channels need to stay open – particularly during times of change. She admits, it does take effort but is extremely worthwhile.

For leaders, change is a golden opportunity – become a champion of change. Another hot tip is to identify talent and talent leaders within your team, and then empower them.

4. Video is bigger than ever

James Brennan of Kaltura shared that video is the language the new generation speaks. Did you know that in 2018, 75% of workers will interact with video over three times daily?

5. Talent Agility

The universal goal of the forum was to stay ahead of the game to deliver the best HR solutions for your people so talent agility was a key topic.

Anne’s presentation encouraged audiences to reimagine talent management. She argued that the Old School talent matrix is not delivering workforce agility.  HR leaders need to drive change. As Ashley Winnett, Executive Director HR of Holden Australia pointed out that change can hurt, but it’s necessary to prepare for the future, organisations need to find the courage to adapt and evolve.

So what does career agility need to look like today for a 2020 world? Anne’s presentation should provide you with some useful insights, just click on the image below:Talent Challenge

Get motivated on Blue Monday 2018

Blue-Monday-Motivation-at-Work

The third Monday of January, this year the 15th of January, is now known as Blue Monday due to a combination of post-Christmas blues, cold dark nights and the arrival of unpaid credit card bills.

There’s an obvious nod to the best-selling 12-inch single of all time of the same name, released by snythpop pioneers New Order in 1983.

We imagine their record label, Factory Records, weren’t too happy either to discover that the original die-cut sleeve (designed by Pete Saville to resemble a floppy disc) was losing them money. Eventually, there was a happy ending as ‘Blue Monday’ shifted over 1.1 million long-playing singles – a figure unlikely to be beaten even in these more vinyl-friendly times.

Blue-Monday-Motivation-at-Work

‘Blue Monday’ the day in January, was arrived at, allegedly, after a university professor developed a formula to calculate the most depressing day of the year:

[W + D – d]TQ

MNa

Where W = Weather, D = debt accumulated, d = ability to pay that debt, T = time since Christmas, Q = time since failing our new year’s resolutions, M = low motivational levels and Na = the feeling of a need to take action.

The calculation seems plausible, if a little crude, but in reality, it was dreamt up by the PR team at Sky Travel.

Wikipedia says the concept is little more than pseudoscience. However, 2014 saw Blue Monday invoked by legal firms and retailers of bottled water and alcoholic drinks. Other versions of the original story purport to analyse social media trends to ‘calculate’ the date.

I do like Mondays

Blue Monday, the mid-January Monday, has now passed into urban myth and occasionally crops up, sometimes taken seriously and sometimes debunked.

Team 10Eighty are an upbeat bunch and we always see the New Year as the best time of the year for a Career MoT. As January begins last year’s slate is wiped clean and on the horizon are 12 months of new possibilities and opportunities.

It may be dismal, damp and chilly at the moment so find all those reasons to be cheerful, and celebrate good times whatever you can:

  • Celebrate Martin Luther King Day, also on the 15th it’s a federal holiday in the USA, so why not take a day off in solidarity (if you don’t live in the US, obvs!)
  • Look forward to Winnie the Pooh Day on January the 18th, have a picnic (an indoor one if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere) and celebrate A.A.Milne’s birthday
  • Take a detour on the way to the office and buy a bunch of sunflowers or some scarlet tulips for your desk or maybe brighten up a colleague’s day
  • Do a random act of kindness – compliment a stranger (in a non-creepy way) , pay for the person behind you in the queue’s coffeee, make someone smile, pick up some litter, or call a random person on your Contacts and surprise them Scott Mills style by saying: ‘I love you’!
  • Be good to yourself – every 20 minutes get up, stretch and spend two minutes moving around. Don’t eat ‘al desko’ have a sit-down lunch with a colleague you really vibe off and take a mini-digital detox, leave your phone behind too
  • Be good to others – thank the people you come into contact with every day such as , checkout staff, doormen, security staff or customer service folk. They may only be doing their jobs but they will surely appreciate some eye contact, a smiley ‘hello’ or a cheery ‘thank you’.
  • And if you’re a turophile (that’s the technical term for a cheese aficionado) why not take the day by the short and curlies by treating yourself to 200 grammes of the cheese created by Blur bass player’s Alex James known as ‘Blue Monday’? It’s “a rich pasteurised, sophisticated blue cows milk cheese” and just a fiver from the Cheese Society’s website.

Monday kicks off a whole new week. And if you didn’t quite keep up your New Year resolutions over the last 14 days, try again this week. Failing that Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dog starts on Friday 16th February 2018 so you could take a resolution reboot next month.

Mind you, if you have kept your resolutions since Jan 1st enjoy some cheese or coffee today and pat yourself on the back.

Christmastime is here – happiness and cheer at the 10Eighty Xmas Party

10Eighty-Christmas-2017

They say as you get older, the years seem to pass by more quickly. So call us ‘old’ because by the time the 10Eighty Christmas Party on Monday 27 November at the Royal Exchange came around we couldn’t believe it was 12 months since the last one!

10Eighty-Christmas-2017

We were joined by 90 people for the festivities and some impressive festive refreshments which included homemade lemonade, beers and a plentiful supply of white i.e. Blanc de Blanc-Sec, Jean-Paul Gascogne (no relation to Newcastle’s famous son Gazza) and red i.e. Rhone, France, 2015 and Cuvée Jean Paul Rouge, Pays De Vaucluse, Rhône France 2015.

10Eighty-Christmas-2017

The canapes did flow and included some yummy bite-sized morsels: cured beef carpaccio on toasted crostini with rocket pesto and truffle oil, duck breast, hoisin sauce, spring onion in a pancake wrap, a soft-boiled quail egg sesame & ginger relish on rye toast, grilled lamb skewers with green harissa dipping, chicken satay with peanut butter and coconut dipping and roasted fennel sausages, honey mustard glaze.

10Eighty-Christmas-2017

Meat dodgers were well served with parmesan creme, sable tartlet poached pear, balsamic and spicy Spanish omelette with pequillo peppers on a brioche bun.

10Eighty-Christmas-2017

Everyone took part in a raffle to raise money for Crisis at Christmas who support people out of homelessness for good. They do this through education, training and support with housing, employment and health and they offer one-to-one support, advice and courses for homeless people in 12 areas across England, Scotland and Wales.

10Eighty-Crisis-at-Christmas

We raised £780 on the night, which 10Eighty will match, so £1560 will go towards supporting homeless people this Christmas.

1st prize in the raffle was a £100 Christmas hamper and 2nd prize a £50 John Lewis voucher – congratulations to winners Urvashi Desai, Strategic HR Business Partner at The Crown Estate and Paul Chappell.

Mid-way through proceeding CEO Michael gave one of his 90-second ‘thank you’ speeches which obviously included Christmas and New Year wishes too.

Although ‘last orders’ were officially 9pm, everyone enjoyed themselves so much, the festivities drew to a close around 10pm.10Eighty-Christmas-2017

Thanks to all our clients, associates and friends who joined us on Monday. Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year from everyone at 10Eighty!

Our Kiwi partner Fuel50 raises $2.5m

Fuel50-Logo

Fuel50-LogoWe were delighted to recently hear the news that our New Zealand partner, Fuel50, who developed the career pathing software CareerCENTRE™ (known as Fuel50 in other countries) raised $2.5 million in Series A funding, which brings total funding to an impressive $4.6 million.

Two prominent southern California firms, Rincon Venture Partners and Bonfire Ventures led this latest round of funding

The funding will help Fuel50 and 10Eighty to continue enabling leaders to engage and motivate their teams, and empower employees to have a visible career path in their organisation.

With high-quality candidates in short supply and increasing costs of talent turnover, career pathing has become more critical than ever – Deloitte named career pathing a key area that organisations should focus on.

More than 80 percent of companies want better talent mobility while 70 percent of employees leave due to lack of career development and growth opportunities.

Solutions that impact on engagement

The technology in CareerCENTRE™ addresses these gaps with solutions that directly impact on engagement, performance and retention — enabling employees to drive their own growth and performance within an organization.

Anne Fulton, CEO and Co-Founder, Fuel50 said:

“The way talent traditionally climbs the career ladder and develops skills is broken, leaving talent frustrated and companies lacking the levels of engagement and performance required to move at the pace of business today,”

“In our short history, our customers have already realised real engagement wins while top talent has developed in meaningful ways. We’ll use our funding to service our growing corps of clients and to expand our reach even further around the world.”

The funding round also introduces Jim Andelman, co-founder and Managing Director of Rincon Venture Partners and Bonfire, to Fuel50’s board.

“Career pathing is one of the next frontiers of HR technology, and Fuel50 is at the forefront of this shift, equipping companies with the tools and technology to give their talent a meaningful career trajectory,” commented Andelman.

Launched in 2014 by co-founders Anne Fulton and Jo Mills, Fuel50 (aka CareerCENTRE™) is currently used by 75 Fortune 500 companies, across 33 countries and in 28 languages, supporting hundreds of thousands of employees.
