International Happiness to the rescue

International-Day-of-Happiness

Happy International Happiness Day!  Today, 20 March 2017 is International Happiness Day, a United Nations global celebration coordinated by Action for Happiness, a non-profit movement of people from 160 countries, supported by a partnership of like-minded organisations.

The campaign believes that people are now recognising that ‘progress’ should be about increasing human happiness and wellbeing, not just growing the economy. Because of this growing interest, many governments, communities and organisations are using happiness data, and the results of subjective well-being research, to enable policies that support better lives.International-Day-of-Happiness

Happiness as a fundamental goal

When we think about human happiness, economists tend to emphasise the role of personal income; libertarians espouse personal freedom and autonomy; sociologists talk of social capital and trust in society; and political scientists look to constitutional order and control of corruption. Yet none of these disciplines do justice to the concept of happiness

In 2011, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution which recognised happiness as a “fundamental human goal” and called for “a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples”.

At 10Eighty our motto is “work hard, do good and along the way have fun”. We firmly believe that the smart way to organise your career is to play to your strengths and if you find a role you love and it won’t even seem like working.

A workplace where people love their work and are calm, stress-free and happy is more likely to be productive. Laughter brings people together; we like to be with those who are having fun. Creativity, agility and flexibility are key to organisational success and a fun workplace is more productive, so it attracts people and profits.

Taking happiness seriously

Beyond a basic point, increasing economic growth loses the ability to lift happiness levels but there is a lot we can all do to make the world a better place.

Happiness is creative, proactive and constructive and is a state best achieved when shared. When you contribute to the happiness of those around you, you improve your own chances of happiness.

At a workplace level it may sound unfair, or even unprofessional, but it is nicer to work with people who are happy, likeable, positive, enthusiastic, and energetic. It is at least in part a function of our intention to be collaborative, appreciative, positive and self-aware.

Famously Bhutan measures the Gross National Happiness of their population. Traditional economic theory measures growth but doesn’t really look very hard at what is being grown. If you ask people what really matters to them and offer them alternatives such as family, spirituality, pleasure, responsibility, generosity, material wealth and career you will materialism ranking at the bottom of the list and family at the top. We know what makes us happy but that doesn’t necessarily stop the chase after money, power and status.

We can’t legislate for happiness but we can provide the conditions that help the growth of happiness. In the workplace this would mean an organisational culture that values and promotes, inter alia, trust, openness, collaboration, fairness and diversity.

The Action for Happiness pledge is: “I will try to create more happiness in the world around me”.

Strengthscope® certified by British Psychological Society

British-Psychological-Society-Certified-Strengthscope

We’re delighted to announce that Strengthscope® has become the first strengths assessment to achieve Registered Test Status with the UK’s British Psychological Society (BPS), which means it is the only strengths assessment in the world to achieve this highly prestigious status, obtained only after rigorous testing for reliability, validity and ‘fitness for purpose’.BPS standards are based on European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations (EFPA) guidelines, which are recognised as a global gold standard. The BPS has confirmed that Strengthscope®:

  • Measures the 24 strengths in the model reliably over time
  • Predicts high performance at work
  • Measures what energises and motivates people at work in order to help them discover areas where they can achieve peak performance and high engagement (in this sense, Strengthscope® differs from traditional personality measures that help to explain behaviour and preferences).

BPS Logo

In addition, recent independent studies, including one by City University London¹, have shown that Strengthscope® is both a valid and reliable measure of work-based strengths and other studies show that the assessment measures strengths without bias across gender, age and ethnic group.

Dr Paul Brewerton, Joint Managing Director of Strengths Partnership and co-creator of Strengthscope®, said: “We’re delighted to have been recognised by the British Psychological Society. Achieving this ‘gold standard’ means that our customers can be certain that the assessment measures employees’ work-based strengths and energies fairly and precisely wherever they are in the world, and that Strengthscope® accurately predicts and activates peak performance at work.”

Strengthscope® was developed in the UK 10 years ago by Strengths Partnership founders Dr Paul Brewerton and James Brook, and is used by a wide range of organisations globally to energise peak performance at work. The cloud-based strengths profiling system powers employee development programmes for many leading brands including Sainsbury’s, EE, BT, PhotoBox, Channel 4, BOC and Genentech.

10Eighty has been partnering for several years with the Strengths Partnership.

At 10Eighty our motto is “work hard, do good and along the way have fun”. We think that if you love what you do it often doesn’t really feel like work, and it is mostly fun.

We certainly enjoy our work and the various disciplines we’re involved in have kept 10Eighty in shipshape shape for nearly 5 years now, but did you know that…

Director Liz featured in HR Grapevine’s 2017 Guide to Learning Technology

HR-Grapevine-2017-Guide-To-Learning-Technology

HR-Grapevine-2017-Guide-To-Learning-Technology We wanted to let you know that 10Eighty Director, Liz Sebag-Montefiore was quoted in the article “Treat employees like consumers when it comes to e-learning” which you’ll find on pages 6 to 8 of HR Grapevine’s 2017 Guide to Learning Technology.

The guide looks at advances in digital technology and how these are creating new opportunities in the learning industry. It also asks how L&D teams can treat employees more like consumers and take on the challenge of ‘on demand’ content that means we have information and entertainment at our figures thanks to likes of Netflix, Amazon and others.

The “Treat employees like consumers…” article suggests that we should start thinking about e-learning as an interactive, not a passive experience and Liz answers a question about how employers should go about selecting the right system or platform for your organisation’s e-learning.

It goes on to explore the best format for learning and the best methods for employees to gain new knowledge and skills and how best to personalise the learning experience.

We’re sponsoring HR Grapevine’s Magic of HR conference

HR-Grapvine-Magic-of-HR-2017

We wanted to let you know that we’re sponsoring the HR Grapevine annual conference “The Magic of HR” on Thursday 16 March 2017 at The Brewery 52 Chiswell Street, Moorgate, EC1Y 4SD.

The full title of the conference The Magic of HR: The key to achieving is to get people believing and this year the event will explore HR’s magical role in the context of uncertainty and a constantly changing world that requires new ways of working.

“The rate of change may seem unmanageable, it is the magic of HR that will enable businesses to achieve the impossible. Whether in delivering performance through people, or ensuring the workforce is agile and adaptable enough to navigate the changing environment. In such a fast-moving world, HR needs to empower leaders, anticipate the future and inspire an entire workforce in order to allow for successful transformations.”

HR-Grapvine-Magic-of-HR-2017

The key to achieving is to get people believing

Next month HR Grapevine is gathering a unique line-up of Board Executives and HR Directors to speak about the magic of the people function and how the key to achieving is to get people believing. This could mean fostering a belief across the entire workforce that the business can do the impossible, or getting those at the top to believe in the importance of the people agenda and its power to transform.

Here’s the agenda for the day:

7:45am to 8:30am – Registration and networking
8:30am – Conference Address
8:45am to 10:15am – Session 1: Change & Transformation
10:15am to 11:00am – Networking and coffee
11:00am to 12:30pm – Session 2: Performance & Productivity
12:30pm to 1:30pm – Networking session + Cocktails and Standing Starters

So we hope you can join 400 senior HR professionals at this year’s event for inspiration, lively debates and networking. A ‘magical lunch’ is also promised, but nothing will be revealed until 16 March…

Takeaways from Scott Moeller’s talk ‘Why M&A deals fail and how to rescue them’

why-ma-deals-fail-10eighty-scott-moeller

We hosted a successful 10Eighty event last Thursday at The Beaumont Hotel, Mayfair ‘Why M&A deals fail and how to rescue them’ when we were delighted to welcome guest speaker Scott Moeller. Scott is Professor in the Practice of Finance and Director of the M&A Research Centre at Cass Business School and the former CEO and Director of Executive Education.

why-ma-deals-fail-10eighty-event-scott-moeller

And we wanted to share some takeaways from this engaging evening event.

Our CEO Michael Moran said: “Having heard Scott it re-emphasises the importance of getting the people dynamics of a merger/acquisition right. Knowledge workers have choice. You need to win the hearts and minds of those you are acquiring. All too often we forget it is people that create shareholder value.

Accountants can see the undoubted benefits that economies of scale can create often forgetting that without those who add value at the front end of the business there is no business. Scott’s story about HP’s acquisition of Autonomy should serve as a lesson to all those who acquire without regard to the people dynamic.”

Director Dave Harrison, was also in attendance and told us: “The key learnings for me were: ‘It’s not all about the financials, don’t forget about the people as they are the ones that will make (the business) successful. Be open, be transparent. With regard to the people, act fast too. Don’t draw it out'”

Watch a video of the event…

We produced two videos from footage shot throughout the evening. The Coffee Break/Highlights version which is 4 minutes and the Lunch Time/Full version which is 11 minutes. Take your pick!

… and read the article too

Katie Jacobs of HR Magazine was one of our guests, and she wrote an article on Mergers and Acquisitions titled: Focus on the people agenda to avoid M&A derailment which quotes Scott on the many things that can cause an M&A deal to go wrong.

As well as engaging discussions, delicious food was also on the menu:

beaumont-mayfair-10-eighty-event-why-ma-deals-fail beaumont-mayfair-10-eighty-event-why-ma-deals-fail

why-ma-deals-fail-10eighty-event-1

why-deals-fail-how-to-rescue-them-scott-moellerEveryone got a signed copy of Scott’s lastest book Why Deals Fail and How to Rescue Them: M&A lessons for business success available from Amazon (other book retailers are available!).

The 3 Big Mistakes of Dealmaking

Michael Moran’s LinkedIn Pulse article, published today, M&A: When soft stuff becomes hard stuff goes into more detail about Scott’s talk, in particular the 3 Big Mistakes of Dealmaking – planning, communication and people

Planning: Moeller says that if you do not have a clear and detailed deal strategy, no planning for integration will suffice, because the two are so closely intertwined.

Communication: We all recognise communication as a good thing, but it’s crucial to understand exactly why. Good communication is, crucially, a reflection of a well-prepared, well-aligned combined management team.

People: Closest to 10Eighty hearts. Moeller says poor communication and a lack of understanding of a new culture leads to the third failure: to appreciate, evaluate and consider the value of people.

Scott’s points, especially the last of these, goes to the essence of what 10Eighty believes. It even reflects our name – all mergers and acquisitions stand or fall on how you work to inspire the 10% of highly talented individuals and the 80% of employees, who are the bedrock of the business.
