Once more unto Battersea Park dear friends, once more. 10Eighty have taken part in the annual JP Morgan Corporate Challenge since our inception and this year was no exception.

On Wednesday 5 July Team 10Eighty were amongst 14,000 other runners (another cohort of runners took part on Thursday) that braved the balmy conditions and the 5,600m, which on paper seems a short distance but in a racing context the road goes on forever… or for 50-odd minutes at least!

Due to sheer numbers, although the starter’s pistol was fired at 6.45, most of our team didn’t reach the starting line until around 7.30. Trevor started upstream in the ‘blue stream’ for those committed to running the entire circuit.

Cheerleaders peppered the circuit, encouraged tired legs and provided motivation. Particularly noisy/motivating was the Cancer Research UK contingent positioned around the halfway mark and reminding participants of the primary reason for taking part in this fun run.

As you can see from the finishing times, Trevor and Nigel ran away with the best times, with Ian being the fastest walker/jogger of the rest of us. Mind you Emma and Natasha would probably have given him a run for his money but for their strategic comfort break early doors…

A meal at Director Liz’s favourite Italian provided a welcome respite from the heat and solace for sore limbs as everyone looked forward the 2018 Corporate Challenge…

Another fantastic night at the HR Excellence Awards 2017

The HR Excellence Awards were held earlier this week (is it us or do these awards seem to come around quicker each year?!). They are the longest-running, most prestigious and most hotly-contested awards in HR, now in their 22nd year with a record number of entries.

Since 10Eighty started up we’ve always supported the HR Excellence Awards, initially sponsoring the Rising Star and Young Talent categories, but for the last two years have supported the HR Future Leader of the Year category.

This year the awards were hosted by comedian Meera Syal on Tuesday 27 June at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

Support Trevor’s Long Walk (100km) to Exmouth

Trevor MerridenWe wanted to let you know that our Head of Collaborative Learning, Trevor Merriden, along with 20 cricketing Dads from St Albans, Herts, is walking 100km from Weymouth to Exmouth for charity.

Trevor and his merry band from the Garden Fields Cricket Club – also known as “Men of Fields”, or MoF for short – are a collection of Dads who play friendly evening matches of 20 overs against similar Dad teams within the St Albans area.  MoF are described as “gentlemen, proper players and the rest are, well let’s just say. ‘useful chaps'”!

great-ormond-streetThey’re raising money for Great Ormond Street Hospital and Children’s Charity in memory of Maisie Ryan of Garden Fields JMI School. All their children attend this school – and when Maisie died suddenly, aged 6 last year, they wanted to do something to honour her memory. So with the support of her parents, we came up with the idea of the walk.

Over the years the Men of Fields have  raised money for charity by undertaking challenges such as the L2B bike ride, Cycling to Devon from St Albans and walked the circumference of the Isle of Wight.

When they heard of the tragic loss of little Maisie they came up with this idea – a long-distance 100km walk (60+ miles in old money) from Weymouth to Exmouth starting tomorrow 23 June and finishing on Sunday 25 June. They’ve had a fantastic response so far and have raised over £11K, but there’s still time to support MoF:

We got an update on Wednesday 28 June from our ‘Man in the field’, Trevor:

“The final brave man crossed the line at about 8.30pm on Monday (26 June) night – broken but alive (just) after 3 days, 65 miles (over 100km) and just under 9,000 ft of climbing – and descending again (think Ben Nevis twice and then some).

To say it was tough was somewhat of an understatement – it was brutal – and your generous sponsorship has been well and truly earned! However lots of laughs and stories – never a dull moment – and, of course, lots of blisters. Thanks to everyone who has already made a donation!”

Anne Fulton, the CEO of Fuel50, will be visiting from the US and on the 19th she plans to talk about the CareerCENTRE™, this powerful career management and career pathing tool and provide her insights, based on their clients’ recent experience.

What did you learn at Learning at Work Week?

This year’s Learning at Work Week (LAWW) seemed more low key than previous years. Maybe the election is distracting all those journalists who write about careers and the world of work.

Learning-at-Work-Week-Curious-Creative I did deliver two very well attended sessions at Disney in Hammersmith as part of their events for LAWW. I really enjoy these sessions. I am fascinated by the fact that most people give so little thought to their career despite the amount of time they spend working over their lifetime. It is so pleasurable to help people get an insight into their values and talents.

I was disappointed that LAWW didn’t generate much publicity. Most people need help when it comes to planning their career. Employers via LAWW can create awareness amongst their people and particularly their responsibility to take the time to understand what is important and what it is they like doing and are consequently good at. Knowing what is important and what it is we like doing is essential for job satisfaction.

There is nothing worse than that Sunday evening feeling of dreading the return to work on Monday morning. I believe everyone can have job satisfaction and career success.  You just need to spend the time to understand yourself.

Career Ladders AppSelf-investment is critical for long-term employability. Employability is all about having skills and knowledge the marketplace is buying both now and more importantly in the future. Sadly, all too often, we think just working hard and doing the best job we can will preserve our employment status. There is no UK employer that can guarantee you a job for life.  It is essential you take the time to self-invest. Ask yourself. have you been appreciating as an asset?

At the point of setting up 10Eighty, I created an App, a game of Snakes and Ladders which in effect audits how well you are presently managing your career. There are 8 simple questions. Answer the question correctly, you go up a ladder; answer incorrectly, you go down the snake. Following each question you get a personalised career tip on what you need to do to ensure you maintain employability.

10Eighty is 5 and we’re still top of the world!

On Wednesday (3 May) we celebrated our 5th birthday at Skyloft, located on the 28th Floor of Millbank Tower and offering guests stunning (if slighty misty that evening), vistas down the Thames towards London landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament, London Eye and St Paul’s Cathedral.

Around 100 guests attended this year, a similar tally to last year’s bash. We quaffed flowing red and white wine and non-alcoholic beverages, providing a perfect complement to the tasty canapes passed around by Skyloft’s attentive staff.

Team 10Eighty take on their 5th JP Morgan Corporate Challenge

We wanted to let you know that we’re taking part in the 2017 JP Morgan Corporate Challenge ® in Battersea Park on Wednesday 5 July.

Regular readers will know that this has been an annual fixture in the 10Eighty calendar and will be our 5th year – here’s how we fared when we took part in 20162015, 2014 and 2013.

This year’s event promises to be a “better than ever celebration of corporate teamwork, camaraderie and community.” Taking part are 6 Team 10Eighty members will be running (or walking) 5.6 km around the picturesque riverside park : CEO Michael, Operations Manager Sarah, Finance Director Nick, Business Development lead Emma, and first timer Toby who’s our new Managing Director Wales/Cymru.

Sarah is our ‘Company Captain’ so she’ll be responsible for orientation, race bibs, branded T-shirts and making sure everyone provides essential info prior to the run. Head of Leadership Development Joan will kindly be looking after our belongings whilst the race is taking place and Hannah and Liz will be watching from the sidelines this year but have every intention to take part in 2018.

International Happiness to the rescue

Happy International Happiness Day!  Today, 20 March 2017 is International Happiness Day, a United Nations global celebration coordinated by Action for Happiness, a non-profit movement of people from 160 countries, supported by a partnership of like-minded organisations.

The campaign believes that people are now recognising that ‘progress’ should be about increasing human happiness and wellbeing, not just growing the economy. Because of this growing interest, many governments, communities and organisations are using happiness data, and the results of subjective well-being research, to enable policies that support better lives.International-Day-of-Happiness

Happiness as a fundamental goal

When we think about human happiness, economists tend to emphasise the role of personal income; libertarians espouse personal freedom and autonomy; sociologists talk of social capital and trust in society; and political scientists look to constitutional order and control of corruption. Yet none of these disciplines do justice to the concept of happiness

In 2011, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution which recognised happiness as a “fundamental human goal” and called for “a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples”.

At 10Eighty our motto is “work hard, do good and along the way have fun”. We firmly believe that the smart way to organise your career is to play to your strengths and if you find a role you love and it won’t even seem like working.

A workplace where people love their work and are calm, stress-free and happy is more likely to be productive. Laughter brings people together; we like to be with those who are having fun. Taking happiness seriously

Beyond a basic point, increasing economic growth loses the ability to lift happiness levels but there is a lot we can all do to make the world a better place.

Happiness is creative, proactive and constructive and is a state best achieved when shared. When you contribute to the happiness of those around you, you improve your own chances of happiness.

At a workplace level it may sound unfair, or even unprofessional, but it is nicer to work with people who are happy, likeable, positive, enthusiastic, and energetic. It is at least in part a function of our intention to be collaborative, appreciative, positive and self-aware.

Famously Bhutan measures the Gross National Happiness of their population. Traditional economic theory measures growth but doesn’t really look very hard at what is being grown. If you ask people what really matters to them and offer them alternatives such as family, spirituality, pleasure, responsibility, generosity, material wealth and career you will materialism ranking at the bottom of the list and family at the top. We know what makes us happy but that doesn’t necessarily stop the chase after money, power and status.

We can’t legislate for happiness but we can provide the conditions that help the growth of happiness. In the workplace this would mean an organisational culture that values and promotes, inter alia, trust, openness, collaboration, fairness and diversity.

The Action for Happiness pledge is: “I will try to create more happiness in the world around me”.
